Deploying and extending Eclipse Dataspace Components Connectors in support of the European Green Deal
By Raul Palma (PCSS)
Entities participating in a data space may have varying levels of trust, ranging from partners to untrusted parties or direct competitors. It is therefore essential that participants remain in control of the data they share at all times. To ensure this kind of data sovereignty, we need the right technical tools.
SAGE is exploring how Eclipse Data Components (EDC), particularly EDC connectors, can be sufficiently robust for the purposes of the GDDS. Raul Palma, technical lead from PCSS, explains that the following progress has been made.
- A SAGE tested with EDC connectors has been deployed, including 3 participants (SAGE, Provider & Consumer).
- These participants can publish data assets from multiple sources, including GeoNetwork and STAC catalogues.
- Data Catalog Vocabulary (DCAT) can be used as a metadata standard for describing data assets and provision of mappings (e.g., from STAC to DCAT).
- Data product pages can be created within the connector dashboard to improve usability and access.
- Integration is possible with EGI Check-in via the connector identity provider, enabling secure and federated authentication.
- EDC connectors can be connected with the SAGE catalog portal for enhanced discovery and interoperability.
- Decentralized Claims Protocol (DCP) implementation, configuration and deployment have been completed.
These developments strengthen secure, interoperable, and FAIR-aligned data sharing within SAGE, enabling seamless integration of environmental and other green deal related datasets for downstream analytics and AI-ready data provisioning.
SAGE (the Data Space for a Sustainable Green Europe) is a Digital Europe co-funded project that will develop a federated, secure, and interoperable data space to support key pillars of the European Green Deal — biodiversity, climate adaptation, circular economy, and zero pollution.
